Offering: fine fleece yarn in natural colors, wool items

Curlee Acres is a small farm located near Centuria, WI.

When we moved to our country place with our young family, it wasn’t long before we set up a sheep shed and fencing. After some trial and error with our first few sheep, we acquired Shetlands, who have lived up to their eputation as sturdy and easy mothers. And as a knitter, they met my desire for a wool breed, along with a nod to my Scottish heritage. Raising a handful of sheep was just right as a family hobby.

In 2018, I refined my focus to the fine fleece Shetlands who have next-to-skin soft wool. I’m enthralled by the wide range of their natural colors. I love how their colors blend and contrast in colorwork. Wool that doesn’t make the grade for yarn is used for cozy rugs and felted items. Since all wool is useful, the dirty fleece parts are utilized for garden mulch and nourishing the soil.

As our wool venture expanded, so did the flock, totaling eighteen by 2021. We also added more pastureland. By using rotational grazing practices, it transformed from a stagnated, conventional crop field into living soil and thriving grasses.

In our early years with sheep we had little awareness about the potential for sheep and wool benefiting the biosphere. Now I am a proponent that sheep are fundamental in saving the world. The Three Rivers Fibershed has provided the support and inspiration needed for this earth-nurturing journey with our sheep.
