Trinity Muller is the natural dyer and fiber enthusiast behind Petal & Hank, a small natural dye studio based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Petal & Hank offers limited edition dye kits, one of a kind finished goods, and small batch yarn and roving releases that feature natural dyes on natural fibers.
It is all about the flowers! Well, the flowers along with the bark, leaves, roots, nuts, wood chips, insects, and fruit and vegetable skins that are used to create a wide range of colors. The dyes used to make Petal & Hank's goods are farmed or foraged in Minnesota and Wisconsin, gleaned from local produce farms, and sourced from responsible natural dye companies.
Thanks to the work of local shepherds and fellow stewards, Petal & Hank’s naturally dyed roving includes fiber from a wide range of breeds. The fibers are dyed in the fleece/locks and blended in the picking and carding processes. The slow milling approach used ensures a lofty roving.
Petal & Hank’s yarns are dyed with the goal of making unique colors. When immersion dyeing, colors are created by blending and/or layering dyes for a semi-solid or tonal result. In the bundle dye process, steam heat encourages the whole dyestuff to transfer colors with a speckled or painted aesthetic.
The fibers and yarns that make up Petal & Hank's offerings are a combination of midwestern US sourced fiber farm fleeces, breed-specific farm yarns, and carefully curated commercial yarn bases. Cotton and silk finished goods are made from 100% natural fibers and are organic whenever possible. All yarns and fibers are non-superwash with the exception of a mending/embroidery thread.
Petal & Hank also offers a line of natural dye kits so that makers can create their own naturally dyed goods with the support of detailed written instructions. Choose your own adventure with floral bundle dye kits for bandanas and towels or immersion dye kits with yarn.
